Living in a staged home

By Bryce A Raley

I love living in a staged home. A staged home means no clutter and things are always in their homes where they should be. It’s the whole family working hard to clean up each area before they move onto the next. This is the way you have to operate when you have a home for sale. At any moment, with little notice; the realtor calls and says someone wants to see your home in an hour at lunch- in a few hours at dinner or Sunday afternoon while you’ve been out all day. Whatever the case, first impressions are huge and we have staged our home and we try our best to keep it that way.

I have a question.

Why not live this way all the time? I know the spontaneous people are cringing. How relaxing would that be to have to constantly pick up after yourself and put things back? How frustrating to clean consistently each week? How inflexible to eliminate the excess stuff and furniture in the meantime?

Let me turn the tables and say. How relaxing to walk into a room and have your eyes relax, because they’re not distracted by the piles of clutter? How convenient it is to never look for keys, mail, papers, jackets, hats, shoes, toilet paper, light bulbs and kids toys? How flexible it is to be able to host a birthday party on Saturday night knowing you have an open house scheduled for Sunday after church? How liberating it is to focus on the important things because all the unimportant “stuff” is not there anymore?

Here are the pictures of our home for sale. Not totally minimalistic, but we’re aiming for it.
